Watching an experienced flair bartender behind the bar can make everything look effortless. The pours are accurate, the movements are controlled, the drinks arrive quickly and the flair becomes part of the service rather than something separate from it.
But nobody starts there.
Like every professional skill, flair bartending is learned step by step — through repetition, understanding, practice and progression.
That is exactly what the WFA Learning and Grading System is designed to provide.
And for many bartenders, the first real step is Yellow Grade.
Learning Before Competing
The World Flair Association has always celebrated competition, creativity and the world's greatest flair bartenders.
But the future of flair also depends on something even more fundamental:
Teaching the next generation how to learn.
You don't need to be preparing for a World Championship to start flair bartending. You don't need hundreds of moves. And you certainly don't need to throw three bottles on your first day.
You need foundations.
The WFA grading pathway provides bartenders with a clear structure through which those foundations can be learned, practised, tested and eventually developed into advanced professional skills.
The assessed pathway progresses from Yellow to Orange, Green and Blue, with each level building upon what came before. Yellow is the first assessed grade and establishes the practical foundation for everything that follows.
What Do You Actually Learn at Yellow Grade?
Yellow Grade is not simply about learning a collection of flair moves.
It introduces three fundamental areas of professional bartending:
Free Pouring. Drinks Production. Flair Bartending.
Together, they teach something much more important than tricks — they begin teaching you how to become a more complete bartender.
Learn to Pour with Accuracy
Speed behind the bar means very little without control.
At Yellow level, bartenders learn to accurately free-pour the two most common measures — single and double — using either hand. They also begin incorporating techniques such as the bounce pour and basic flair movement into the pouring process.
This is where flair starts becoming functional. The objective isn't simply to make something look good. It is to maintain accuracy while introducing movement. That distinction matters.
Professional flair should enhance bartending — never compromise the drink.
Learn to Produce Drinks Efficiently
Flair bartending still begins and ends with one responsibility:
Make a great drink for the guest.
The Yellow Grade therefore tests the ability to produce two classic cocktails to specification within a target time of one minute.
The current Yellow routine uses two globally recognised classics — the Espresso Martini and Negroni — giving bartenders the opportunity to demonstrate practical drink-making ability while working against the clock.
This begins developing the habits that matter in a real bar: organisation, economy of movement, awareness of equipment, consistency and speed.
Learn Your First Flair Vocabulary
Every language begins with basic words.Flair is no different.
Yellow Grade introduces 21 fundamental flair moves, which the bartender must demonstrate while producing the same two cocktails within a target time of three minutes.
These movements form part of the vocabulary from which more advanced combinations, transitions and eventually full routines can be created.
The objective at this stage isn't complexity.
It is control.
Learn the movement.
Understand why it works.
Repeat it.
Make it consistent.
Then connect it to the next movement.
This is how real progression happens.
Don't Just Practise. Learn With Purpose.
One of the biggest challenges for anyone beginning flair is knowing what to practise next.
There are thousands of videos online and an almost unlimited number of moves to imitate. That can be inspiring — but it can also leave beginners jumping randomly from trick to trick without developing the fundamentals underneath them.
The WFA learning system provides another approach:
Learn → Practise → Understand → Test → Progress.
The Yellow programme is divided into dedicated learning modules covering Free Pouring, Drinks Production and Flair Bartending. The course currently contains 11 learning steps, followed by the official Grade Test and certification.
Instead of asking:
"What trick should I learn today?"
you begin asking:
"What skill am I developing?"
That change in mindset is important.
Because structured practice creates measurable progress.
Your First Grade Is More Than a Badge
Passing Yellow means you have demonstrated a defined level of practical ability against a recognised WFA standard.
But perhaps more importantly, you have completed your first measurable milestone.
You started with something you couldn't do.
You learned it.
You practised it.
You became consistent.
And finally, you demonstrated it under assessment conditions.
That process builds confidence — and confidence creates momentum.
Once Yellow has been achieved, Orange is no longer an abstract idea. It becomes the next target. Then Green. Then Blue.
The journey becomes visible.

Learn Anywhere. Become Part of Something Global.
WFA Assessed Grades can be completed through an accredited WFA Grading Centre or through the online grading process, allowing bartenders around the world to follow the same structured pathway.
That is one of the most powerful ideas behind the grading system.
A bartender beginning to learn in London, Rome, Mexico, Kazakhstan or anywhere else in the world can work toward the same Yellow standard.
Different countries.
Different bars.
Different backgrounds.
One progression system. One global flair community.

Everyone Starts Somewhere
Look at the world's best flair bartenders today and you see incredible routines, difficult multi-object sequences, creativity, speed and years of experience.
What you don't see are the thousands of hours that came before them.
The first pour.
The first catch.
The first clean sequence.
The first time a move finally worked after dropping the bottle fifty times.
Learning flair isn't about becoming a World Champion tomorrow.
It's about becoming better than you were yesterday.
And that is what Yellow represents.
The beginning.
The foundation.
The point where practising becomes learning — and learning starts becoming a professional skill.
Pick up a bottle. Learn the fundamentals. Complete your Yellow Grade.

Your WFA journey starts here.
LEARN. PRACTISE. PROGRESS. GET GRADED.
