Every profession has a pathway for measuring progress.
Martial artists earn belts. Divers collect certifications. Pilots progress through flight ratings.
Professional bartenders deserve the same.
That is exactly why the World Flair Association (WFA) created the WFA Grading System—an internationally recognised framework that allows bartenders to measure, demonstrate and continuously improve their practical bartending skills.
Today, thousands of bartenders and more than 100 bartending schools worldwide use the WFA Grading System as the benchmark for professional development, helping students transform from complete beginners into confident, highly skilled professionals.
More Than Flair
Many people mistakenly believe that flair bartending is simply throwing bottles.
Professional bartending is much more than that.
The WFA Grading System evaluates the complete bartender by combining three essential disciplines within one round:
- Free Pour Accuracy – Consistent precise pouring.
- Drink Production – Speed, efficiency and cocktail preparation under pressure.
- Flair Bartending – Professional movement, coordination, confidence and guest entertainment.
Together, these skills create a bartender who is faster, more accurate, more entertaining and more valuable behind any bar.
A Clear Pathway to Excellence
The grading journey has been designed so every bartender has a clear goal to work towards.
The system begins with White Grade, available to every WFA member, before progressing through the assessed grades:
- Yellow
- Orange
- Green
- Blue

Beyond the practical grading levels, bartenders can continue progressing through competition achievements, earning Purple, Black, Bronze, Silver and ultimately Gold—the highest distinction awarded to World Number Champions.
Each level represents another milestone in a bartender's career and demonstrates increasing competence, dedication and professionalism.
Why Yellow Grade Matters
For many bartenders, Yellow Grade is where everything begins.
It is the first assessed examination and introduces students to the standards expected of professional bartenders around the world.
During the assessment, flair bartenders must demonstarte their craft flair skills whilst making 2 classic cocktails. An Espresso martini and a Negroni.
Whilst performing the dedicated flair bartending moves they must also show
- Accurate free pouring to ensure the cocktails are made correctly.
- Efficient cocktail production, finishing the drinks within the alloted time.
- Fundamental craft flair techniques.
The cocktails selected are classic drinks that every professional flair bartender should be comfortable preparing, ensuring the examination remains relevant regardless of where someone works in the world.
Passing the WFA Yellow Grade proves that a flair bartender has developed the essential practical skills required to begin a successful career behind the bar.
It also provides the confidence to continue progressing through the higher grades.

Real Recognition That Travels With You
One of the biggest advantages of the WFA Grading System is that your achievements are recognised internationally.
Successful candidates receive:
- An official WFA Certificate
- A digital badge displayed on their WFA profile
- A qualification recognised by bartending schools, employers and the global flair bartending community
Whether you're applying for your first bar job or seeking opportunities on the other side of the world, your WFA Grade provides employers with an immediate understanding of your practical ability.
Building Better Bartenders
The WFA Grading system isn't only for students.
Many of the world's leading bartending schools, hospitality academies and bar groups integrate WFA Gradings directly into their training programmes because it provides a structured and measurable way to develop staff.
Rather than relying on subjective opinions, managers and instructors can assess progress using internationally standardised criteria.
This creates:
- Consistent training standards
- Clear development goals
- Higher staff confidence
- Better guest experiences
- Increased professionalism across the industry
Train With Purpose
One of the greatest motivators in any profession is having a clear target.
Instead of practising random tricks or memorising cocktails without direction, the WFA Grading System gives bartenders specific routines, techniques and objectives to master before progressing to the next level.
Every grade achieved becomes another milestone in a long-term professional journey.
